100 Gig – Not enough though

No am not talking about your hard disk space…its about the 100 Gig ports on the switches.100 Mbps ports on PCs and switches bear a granny look on 1Gig and 10 Gig arrival. With 100 Gig coming on picture 1 Gig will be the industrial standard.

Am not saying that 100 Gig is coming for desktops or servers, but ISPs and Datacenters will be very keen to see them on their networks. It will definitely make the administrator work lot easier.

Am awaiting the dawn of 100 Gig ports hitting the market. We all know this bandwidth hungry market will not get contended with 100 Gig still that’s the one in near horizon. Or for that matter they might be happy to let out 40 Gig immediately which is relatively easier to roll out than 100 Gig. Coz cable requirement, scalability of existing networks, backplane capacity of current switches, chips will be questioned for 100Gig whereas 40G I think can be easily (relative) accommodated.

It took 5 long years to make 10Gig as official standard. How long will it take for 100 Gig ? The hardwares are ready for such huge traffic rate ? Have a look at these links to know a little more on 100 Gigies…

I will try to post a separate article on chip makers of 100 Gig.

  1. hi, could you write the background technology of providing high speed TCP, since we have to use some efficient TCP protocol to provide that much high end throughput.
